Jack Johnson hoodie
Known as the “Galveston Giant,” Jack Johnson was the first African-American Heavyweight Champion of the World, rising to fame at the height of the Jim Crowe era. Along the way, he would break colour barriers across the world, including in the United Kingdom. In 1911, Johnson would travel to London to face Billy Wells in a fight that would never happen. Anti-gambling and anti-black protests would lead to Jack Johnson defending himself in court at the Bow Street Police Court. Johnson and Wells would be forced to agree to never meet in the ring anywhere in the British Empire.
Transcending the sport of boxing, Jack Johnson will always be remembered throughout history as an icon of anti-racism the world over. “I’m black…They never let me forget it…I’m black, I’ll never let them forget it!”
